Losing a loved one is hard—and unfortunately, some scammers try to take advantage of that vulnerable time. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) recently warned about schemes that reference funeral homes and obituary details to trick families. Below is a simple guide to help you stay safe.
How to protect yourself
- Pause & verify. Hang up and call us or the company back using a number you trust.
- Guard personal info. Don’t share SSN, birthdates, account or policy numbers over the phone or email with unsolicited contacts.
- Limit public details. Consider sharing less identifying info in public posts/obituaries.
- Use one trusted contact. Designate a family representative to handle calls and bills.
- Report scams. File a report with BBB Scam Tracker and your local authorities.
