Leroy Curry was born January 11, 1957 in Indianapolis, IN to Willie and Augusta Curry. As a young man growing up in “Nap” he spent his time working with his father. This experience helped him learn the work ethic that he would display throughout his life. The independence and confidence he developed by working ultimately led to what would become one of his signature traits, bossing everyone around. If it wasn’t his way, you could be sure an argument would follow. And, if you managed to win the argument, you’d have to win a fight.
In 1973, the family moved from “Nap” to Las Vegas. As part of the move, Leroy was responsible for escorting his younger siblings, Teresa and Tyree, from Indiana to Nevada. The trio made a stop in New Mexico along the way. The younger Currys were excited to learn more about the local residents and, having never seen a Mexican before, proceeded to ask Leroy if each and every person who walked by was a Mexican. Anyone who knows Leroy knows Teresa and Tyree got beat up for this.
In 1981, Leroy was working at the Sundance Hotel as a craps dealer when he met a blackjack dealer named ElNora Fluker. He described first seeing her by saying, “Coming down the escalator all I saw was titties and hair.” Soon after, the pair began dating and were married in In 1985 and 1987, Leroy experienced what he called the happiest days of his life with the birth of his son, Anthony, and daughter, Victoria.
Leroy was a father like no other. Quick to make a joke at the expenses of his kids, regularly calling Victoria his “killer guard whale” and laughing at Anthony for being dark asking “where’s your personal flashlight so we can see you?” His philosophy on jokes being “get them before they get you.” When not making jokes, he made sure to teach his kids about the value of money. Accomplishing this by making sure that when going to a $9 buffet, they ate their $9’s worth. However, behind all the gruff, roughness, and jokes there was love. Love for his brothers and sisters, his wife and kids, his nieces and nephews, other family, and friends. He would not
hesitate to help anyone he could. Whether his best friend, a loved one, a man on the street, or a beggar outside the store he always took time to do what he could for who he could. He tried his best to convince all of us to want better and to work to do better because he believed we could.
Leroy was preceded in death by his father, Willie Curry, his mother, Augusta Curry, his brothers: David and Tyree Curry, and his sister, Ozie Henry.
He is survived by his wife, ElNora Curry, his son, Anthony Curry, and his daughte, Victoria Curry. His daughters by proxy: Charree and Amber Fluker-Holloway. His brothers: JD (Gloria) Watson, Willie (Sandra) Curry, and Richard Curry. His sisters Lizzie McGown, Susie (Paul) Connor, and Teresa (Jimmy) Stone. He is also
survived by a host of nieces and nephews and other loved ones. He was a giant of a man with an even bigger heart. He was loved and will be missed.
