In Loving Memory of John Gilbert Keeley
John (Jack) Gilbert Keeley passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, surrounded
by his family and loved ones. Born August 16, 1936, in Springfield, Illinois to Joseph T. Keeley
and Margaret (Thompson) Keeley, he was the oldest of 2 children.
He had a generous soul, always willing to give a helping hand to those in need, and a quick wit. He loved engaging in banter, sharing stories and jokes, and meeting new people. Having lost his mother at a young
age due to illness, his grandmother had a profound influence on him growing up. John was a confident man of deep faith, very proud of being an Irish Catholic. He had a knack of cutting to the heart of a matter, and keeping things in their broader perspective.
John’s Military career began with 4 years in the Navy (1953), followed by almost 30 years as active duty Army. He met and married the love of his life, Pierrette, while stationed in Paris, France in 1963. John’s Army career took his family around the world, including stints across the US (including Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Texas, California and Washington), as well as overseas (including France, Germany and Japan). He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He began a second career with the United States Postal Service in Las Vegas in 1978, working there until 2013. Retiring from full-time work, he loved working as a school crossing guard, greeting parents and children with a smile and ensuring their safety across a large, busy road. In his spare time, John enjoyed staying up-to-date on current events, reading (across a wide variety of subjects), watching classic movies and westerns, and being a dedicated regular at the gym, the library and at Mass.
John is survived by his wife, Pierrette Keeley; three daughters, Maryse Keeley, Josette Keeley Domokos (son-in-law, Marius), and Claudine Thackrey (son-in-law, Robert); one son, Pierre Keeley (daughter-in-law, Michelle); his sister, Nadine Adelman; and grandchildren, Ryan, Robert, Richard, Randall, Sylvana, Riley, Octavius, Ronin, Amadea, and Gianna. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph T. Keeley; mother, Margaret Thompson Keeley; stepmother, Roberta; brother-in-law, William “Bill” Adelman; and stepbrother, Tom.
The family will hold a private service along with military honors and the Catholic Rite of Committal, graveside at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City in July.
