Joelena Gay was born on March 27, 1945, to proud parents, Estee and Ruby Wells in Washington D.C. Joelena was a thoughtful and loyal soul whose humor and creativity touched the lives of all who knew her.
From a young age, Joelena displayed a deep passion for education and personal growth. After graduating from high school, she furthered her education at Michigan State University, where she pledged to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and earned her graduate degree. Her life’s journey took her from the bustling streets of the District of Columbia to East Lansing, Michigan; Prince George’s County, Maryland; San Francisco and Daly City, California; and ultimately to Las Vegas, Nevada. Along the way, she traveled extensively, visiting France, Germany, China, Japan, Mexico, Egypt, South Africa, Iceland, Amsterdam, and many parts of the United States. adored.
Joelena was not just an educator; she was a lifelong learner who wore many hats with grace and passion. She excelled as a former real estate agent, a pilot, and a Principal at Malcolm X Academy Elementary School. Her commitment to education and continuous growth was evident in her involvement with numerous esteemed organizations, including the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Association, the National Education Association, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She also served as President of the National Aeronautic Association, where her leadership was both respected and admired. Her outstanding contributions were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Excellence in Principal Award and the Fulbright Hayes Seminar Abroad Program Award.
Joelena’s faith in God guided her throughout her journey, and she found solace in the words of Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Her faith remained steadfast until the very end, serving as a source of strength and comfort to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Estee Wells. On July 25, 2024, Joelena Wells Gay passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and unwavering faith. Just two days later, in July 27, 2024, her mother, Ruby Wells, also departed this life.
