James was born on November 16, 1956, in Newark, New Jersey, to James C. Tate and Dorothy A. Tate. He was the firstborn of their three children. After graduating from high school in Newark, James continued his education at Rutgers University. In 1995, his journey brought him to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he made his home and built a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting relationships.
Described by those who knew him best as compassionate, funny, empathetic, and loving, James possessed an infectious joy that uplifted everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was a devoted New York Giants fan who brought the same enthusiasm he displayed on game days to every part of his life.
James’s natural ability to connect with people served him well throughout his career as a distribution manager. He was respected for his warmth, dependability, and genuine concern for others until his retirement in 2018.
In 2000, James met the love of his life, Jostein. They were united in marriage in 2005 and shared more than two decades of love, companionship, and treasured memories. James’s devotion to his family was deep and unwavering. His home was filled with laughter, affection, and the comfort of knowing that family always came first. For James, family was not simply important—it was everything.
On August 7, 2026, James peacefully departed this life surrounded by his loving family.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Tate and Dorothy A. Tate; his sons, Danior and Brandon; and his sister, Nadine Tate.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Jostein; his sister, Jonelle Tate; his nephew, Amari Tate; his cousin, Brinton Dickerson; his stepchildren, Denerra Jones Sr., Jasmyne Jones, and Clifford Jones Jr.; nine grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.
James’s passing leaves a space that can never be filled, but his compassionate heart, joyful laughter, and enduring love will continue to live through the family and friends whose lives he touched.
A service honoring the life of James Tate Jr. will be held under the direction of Heritage Mortuary Inc. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., at 3610 North Rancho Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89130.
