Apolinar S. Hernandez, 79

Apolinar “Nar” Sunga Hernandez, 79, died from complications of a motor vehicle accident on July 19, 2020 at University Medical Center-Las Vegas with his family by his side.

He was born in Masantol Pampanga, Philippines to Leonardo and Dolores (Sunga) Hernandez on October 6, 1940. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from Far Eastern University (Manila, Philippines). He immigrated to the United States in 1968. Throughout his life, Nar traveled and lived between his favorite places in the United States and the Philippines.

In his early life, Nar worked in Engineering and Real Estate. However, his greatest undertaking was being a “stay at home” dad to his three older children. He devoted many years caring for Antoinette, Basil, and Robert. Life was not always easy raising a child with autism, but he made every effort he could despite the challenges. His love for music rang through the house with his piano playing and beautiful voice. He was smart and funny, always cracking jokes with his merry humor. Later in life, he would often say that one should do as they wish and have no regrets in the end. He was proud of his adventure travels. It was during his adventures in the Philippines that he met his surviving wife Emily and was blessed with another daughter, Miracle. He was fond of sharing his stories and travels with Emily and Miracle. He had this way about him which fostered peace, and his love and care for those around him was endless. His last year of life was plagued with pain and illness. But even through tough times, he would crack a joke and bring a smile to those around him. We are grateful that he no longer has those pains of old age. We take solace and comfort knowing that he is with His Heavenly Father.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Sunga Hernandez, his daughter Antoinette (James Waltenberger) Hernandez of Caledonia, Wisconsin; his son Basil (Alice) Hernandez of Batavia, Illinois; his son Robert Hernandez of Chicago, Illinois, his daughter Miracle Hernandez of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandchildren Lila, Rowan, Sophie, Marcus, and Quinn; his former wife Rosita Soriao Hernandez; his brothers Francisco (Anicia) and Benancio; his nephews and nieces Reynaldo, Hermalita, Herejerica, Michael, Leonardo, Benjamin, Mona; and many other cherished family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Leonardo, his mother Dolores, his sister Josefina Lacap, his brother Hospicio Hernandez and his nephew, Herendino Hernandez.

A visitation service will be held at the Heritage Mortuary, on Monday, July 27 at 10 a.m.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Autism Research Institute. https://www.autism.org/donate-autism-research-institute/. Messages of condolence as well as thoughts and memories are welcomed on our Tribute Wall

To the Hernandez family, my sincere condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that God promises to end all suffering. Before long, God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things (will) have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4). May this promise from God give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathy.

My first memory involves boxing and gambling. My father loved games of chance. When I was young we undertook several family trips to Atlantic City. One in particular I remember quite fondly. In June of 1988 he and I drove to Atlantic City to watch the Mike Tyson vs. Michael Spinks fight. In typical Hernandez fashion we didn’t actually watch the fight. We hung around the hotel and soaked in the atmosphere but did not actually purchase tickets. I was naturally disappointed. The fight of course lasted all of 91 seconds and my dad joked the whole drive home about people who spent hundreds of dollars on a ticket but missed the whole fight because they were buying refreshments.

My second memory involves basketball. The NBA finals were a yearly event at our house. My favorite series was the Boston Celtics vs Los Angeles Lakers 1984 NBA finals. I remember the excitement and comradery my Dad and I shared during those times. Our passion for the sport carried over into many of our one on one basketball games in our backyard. Nar had one heck of a jump shot in his prime.

The final memory I’ll share involves professional wrestling. One of the few stadium events my Dad took me to watch was an AWA Chicago stadium professional wrestling event. Names like Nick Bockwinkel, Greg Gagne, Dick the Bruiser and Andre the Giant were household names for me. We loved it when a wrestler who was on the brink of defeat would be clever and devise a new strategy to win the match.

My father had a true zest for life. James Bond movies, Columbo detective shows, good food and of course his musical favorites Elvis Presley and Kenny Rogers made our household lively and joyful.

They say a father keeps his vices and passes on his virtues. Besides a love of life my dad did pass on to me an admiration for what is good and noble in people as well. Those lessons were more subtle. The strength he exhibited when hitting the heavy bag for “exercise.” The grit he showed me when enduring pain. The faith he showed me when he took me to Church. And those same virtues; discipline, temperance and faith I will pass on to my children. Thank you for everything Dad. I love you.
