Obituary for Martrel DeWayne Johnson

Martrel was born December 13, 1983, in Las Vegas, NV to Cheryl Johnson and Martin Henry. He attended kindergarten at Kermit R. Booker, Junior High School at Kenny C Guinn & Swainston Middle School and graduated from Durango High School in 2002.

Before graduating high school Martrel received a kidney transplant at the age of 17 (donated by his father). After receiving his transplant he went on to graduate from Durango High School in Las Vegas, NV. He then started his college career as a Montana State University Bobcat who with great determination after so much adversity went on to graduate from Pima College in 2017 with an Associate’s Degree in Business Management.

During his time at Montana State is where he met and married Brandi Werner in 2011. She was and is a very devoted wife to Martrel. She stood by him through all his tribulations and adversity. She was and is his rock.

Martrel loved life and lived every second of it to the fullest with laughter, excitement, grace and character. He loved his family more than anything and always put them first. Everyone loved Martrel because he was friendly and kind to all whom he came in contact with. He was the most genuine and kind person. He was an athlete that excelled at all that he pursued, but his passion was basketball. The basketball court was his home away from home. His favorite thing on the count was showing off those dunking skills. (Lol)

Martrel was known by all for his overwhelming drive to overcome his many health setbacks and disabilities, and to give back to those in need. The world has lost the most selfless, caring, gifted and driven man. If you had the pleasure of being in his presence whether it was on the court, as a friend or even meeting for the first time, you just knew he was special. He taught us that we should never give up no matter how hard our path gets, and we will honor him in life with this motto. He was an incredible soul and the world is forever changed without him. Until we meet again in that upper room Martrel... We love you.

The viewing will be held at Heritage Mortuary located at 3610 N. Rancho Dr. on June 5th from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm.
