Obituary for Tony A. Flores
Tony Aguirre Flores was born into this world February 22, 1954 and returned to Spirit on July 24, 2019. He was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Yes, he was a lifetime Spurs fan -- Go Spurs Go!
He blessed many, he loved greatly, and he made this world a better place, a more musical place. He loved experiencing LIFE and "skidded out" while having fun and visiting familia in Las Vegas. He loved traveling. With his great sense of humor, he made friends everywhere he went. His positive attitude and smiles were contagious and he was an empathetic listener.
At Page Middle School, Tony was introduced to the world of band by Mr. Kuentz. He would grow to love all music (except maybe country) and he played multiple instruments. His favorite became jazz, and he loved to jam on his Tenor or Alto saxophone. At Brackenridge High School (Class of 1972), he was selected Drum Major while also competing in track and leading the Student Council as President. To pay for his extra-curricular activities, he hustled running a paper route and selling door to door products.
At the age of 18, while studying Business Administration in college, he started working in the mailroom of USAA and worked his way up to management. He was a great salesman with a strong work ethic and enjoyed coaching others. Tony followed in his father’s footsteps as a driver and owner of ABC Taxi while working a 2nd job to support his family. He loved driving around San Antonio, telling stories of its history, and sharing his childhood memories. During his 28 years at USAA, he played in the 'Full Coverage Band’, participated in several sports teams, taught first aid, served as a teen mentor, and even played Santa Claus. After leaving USAA, he worked in Real Estate and property management and won several awards for being a top Salesman! He loved helping people.
Tony really enjoyed community engagement, serving as treasurer for the Alamo Heights Lions Club and a board member for the Fossil Springs Ranch HOA for many years. He played the saxophone with the Stardust Orchestra, the Alamo Pops Concert Band, Alamo City Community Marching Band, San Antonio Marching Band (with his son Antonio on bass drum), and the Helotes Area Community Band; with his junior high mentor, Mr. Kuentz, directing. At one point he played in 5 different bands. He volunteered at various non-profits and was a Voter Poll Worker as well. He strongly believed in voter participation.
Tony's children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. He instilled his love of music, dance and singing in all of them as well as a strong work ethic. He made sure to attend their performances and started the 'Ice Cream After Every Show' tradition! He was a fun dance partner to everyone.
Dancing with the love of his life, Raquel Flores was one of their favorite things to do, no matter where. They experienced many adventures; often inviting others to join in their fun. It was hard to keep up with those two wild ones!
Tony's heart was BIG and full of love. His legacy lives on through his beautiful, caring wife Raquel Flores; his 4 children: Antonio, Jean, Sara Fuller and husband Chris, Lia Arnold; 14 grandchildren (with one on the way!); 3 great-grandchildren; brother: Manuel; 8 nieces and nephews, and many adventurous friends. He is preceded in death by his mother: Rosa Flores, father: Manuel H. Flores, and sister: Mary Rose Minnich.

A 'Celebration of Life' to honor Tony will occur August 10th at a private home. Details can be found on his FaceBook page.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Helotes Area Community Band at PO Box 507, Helotes TX 78023 or any other musical organization of your choice. The Helotes band is also accepting gently used instruments.
